Dear Parent or Guardian,
This year in health class your child will be asked to explore the following questions about their health and the health of others: What do you think? What do you know? What do you want or need to know more about? How do you feel about? How can you help others who….?
Students in grades six, seven and eight , will meet for Health six days every two weeks for a trimester. One class every two weeks will include a Physical Education component. We will focus on developing skills that will help your child make healthy decisions to improve and maintain their personal health.
Students in the eighth grade will discuss topics which include; physical fitness, safety and emergencies, alcohol and drugs, as well as sex and family life education. In the seventh grade, students will study nutrition and the importance of healthy eating, eating disorders, and maintaining a healthy body. Also, we will be discussing how to improve our interpersonal communication skills and ways to eliminate bullying and violence in our society. We will also discuss the risks of drug misuse and abuse. The sixth grade students will start the year learning about wellness and the importance of setting goals to keep their bodies healthy. Students will access information about the affects of tobacco and the health risks they can cause. We will end the semester learning about germs and how to prevent them from spreading. We will talk about the body’s defense systems and review daily healthy practices for good personal hygiene.
Grading
Grades are based on a point system. Students earn points for in class activities and homework assignments completed outside of class. Points are reduced if work is turned in late. Late homework penalty: turned in on time=100% ; 1 day late=90%; 2 days late=80%; 3 days late=70%; 4 days late = 60%; 5-7 days late =50%. To receive credit students must turn in work within 4 days of the deadline (unless due to absence). Students can make up all missed work. I am available after school for makeup work and extra help! Arrangements have to be made in advance with me by having the parent sign a permission slip.
Students are graded in three areas-Projects (25%), Quizzes(25%), Homework and Class work(25%), Physical Education Component (25%)
· Come to each class prepared with a one subject notebook, (8th graders must bring in a 1 inch three ring binder with paper), pen or pencil, a two pocket folder, and a planner.
